Socialist Quotes for Sunday Reflection pt 88

"We must distinguish the true nationalism that demands to love the nation and defend its interests, from democratic nationalism that defends the interests of the bourgeoisie. In relations with other countries and nations, this manifests itself as egoism or national exclusive role or chauvinism of great power. It is an ideology of a reactionary nature that sows antagonism and disagreement between countries and prevents the development of friendly relations between the peoples of the earth." (Kim Jong Il)

Hong Kong is destroying itself as an important financial centre and tourist attraction, but the 'protesters', which have recently seen a pro Beijing resident set on fire, a young woman tortured, and this latest attack on a seventy year old man, have now crossed the line. They are nothing to do with 'human rights' or 'democracy' (there wasn't an election in one hundred and fifty years of British rule) and everything to do with trying to divide Hong King from the mainland by terrorising people for doing nothing more than speaking Mandarin, the national language of the Chinese nation. All in the service of American Imperialism. The Chinese government wish all Chinese people to speak Mandarin as part of their drive to unify the nation, but no one is being prevented from speaking Cantonese in addition, or or any of the other ethnically diverse languages and dialects of the People's Republic. These acts are mothing but pure thuggery, and there are signs that the remarkably restrained government of China are losing patience and will soon be forced to take resolute action.

The bourgeoisie, properly speaking, has no social idea; the bourgeois social regime is anarchy pure and simple; there’s no longer any city; the social character of acts no longer appears; no superior principle or ideal draws individuals beyond their selfish vision. The social idea can only don two forms: it is military or labor; it cannot be bourgeois.
